Outreach and Education: Public Presentations

Title:  What are my science and engineering opportunities after high school?

Brief Synopsis:  The opportunities for students entering college in the fields of engineering and science are quite diverse and lead to satisfying and rewarding careers.  This presentation will provide an overview of the various engineering and science fields including mechanical and chemical engineering, biological process sciences, and computer science and engineering.  Topics covered include a general overview of the course curriculum, a review of the types of industrial opportunities commonly obtained with these degrees, and the opportunity for undergraduate research within these fields.  Finally, the presentation will conclude with a brief introduction to the science and engineering challenges developing for the coming generation including clean water availability, energy and renewable fuel production, and sustainable food processing.

Target Audience:  High school students interested in learning about their opportunities in careers focused on science and education.

Total Time:  Approximately 45 minutes (adjustable from 30 min to 1 hr)

Title:  A History of Petroleum

Brief Synopsis:  The history of liquid fuels and petrochemicals is extremely rich with amazing stories and colorful characters.  This presentation starts with 19th century whaling as the source of high grade oils through peak American oil production and concludes with the current status of petroleum production and future sources.  Finally, the opportunities for alternative sources including shale oil, oil (tar) sands, and biomass are reviewed within the context of petroleum consumption.

Target Audience:  The general public interested in our history of energy consumption.

Total Time:  2 hours (Can be split into two 1 hr sessions)

Cost:  Free to education and non-profit groups

Title:  Can I Grow my Own Gasoline? (What is the Status of Biofuels in America?)

Brief Synopsis:  The development of biofuels within America has accelerated due to the volatility in the petroleum market and subsequent investment by the U.S. Government and private investors.   The explosion in research and development in these areas has made it difficult to keep track of the recent advances and progress.  This presentation will provide a general background of the technologies being considered, the current start-up companies and their technology, and the important role that the U.S. Government has taken including the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Target Audience:  The general public interested in biofuels and alternative energy.

Total Time:  1 hour (adjustable from 45 min to 75 min)
